Half Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1274
1795. . V-5, LM-8. NGC graded AU-53. Nicely struck on a problem-free planchet with uniform antique toning on both sides. A few light marks near stars 2-3 and in a few of the hair curls nearby. Full, clear legends and stars. V-5 has a faint die crack from the Y to the nose. The Flowing Hair half dimes of 1794-95 were designed by Robert Scot, the chief engraver of the Mint. His design was different than that found on Birch's 1792 half dismes (the spelling of "disme" would gradually evolve to "dime." On the 1792 coins, the denomination is spelled HALF DISME).

Scot's design features a head of Liberty facing to the right with distinctive flowing hair. Fifteen stars, arranged 8x7, surround the head with the date below and the word LIBERTY above. On the reverse, an eagle stands amid an olive branch with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around it. There is no indication of this coin's value on either side, nor would there be until the Capped Bust design was adopted in 1829. Pop 7.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 1275
1800. . LM-1, V-1. PCGS graded AU-55. Attractive even gray toning on both sides, has a short mark on the neck. This is a strongly struck example of the classic period Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle half dime, with abundant detail to all the important high points including many (though not all) stars. 1800 is the first year of issue for the new large eagle reverse design. LM-1 is noted for its perfect LIBERTY with the upper inside point of star 1 close to the small middle curl. Seldom seen with perfect dies. All four digits in the date are equally spaced on this variety, and the first star is low in the field (PCGS # 4264) .

Mint engraver Robert Scot's design for the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle half dime of 1800-05 was first used on the gold quarter eagle in 1796, the half eagle in 1797 and the dollars and dimes in 1798. It features a strengthened and more aesthetic rendering of Stuart's Draped Bust portrait of Liberty, her hair tied with a ribbon. The inscription LIBERTY appears above her head, and surrounding the bust are seven stars to the right and six to the left. The reverse depicts a large eagle with outstretched wings -- the Union Shield on his breast -- clutching thirteen arrows and an olive branch. His beak holds a ribbon inscribed with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM (One made up of many). Thirteen stars are above the eagle, with an arc of clouds above the stars. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the periphery.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

Lot 1276
1835 LM-5.1 Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-65. Boldly struck and nicely toned. Large date, small 5C. 1835 provides considerable interest for the more casual collector of major design variations. In this year, both obverse and reverse designs went through font changes. Obverse dies exist with both large and small dates, and reverse dies have both large and small denominations. All four possible combinations exist. This year also saw the highest recorded mintage of any date in the series, with 2,760,000 half dimes produced. Six obverse dies and eight reverse dies were combined for this coinage to create 11 different die marriages and two remarriages. Several of these varieties are scarce, however, there are no major rarities.

A sparkling Gem coin bursting with luster underneath the toning and all original in appearance. The surfaces are clear of marks. The strike is crisp in most areas, though some lack of detail may be noted at the wing feathers near the left side of the shield (this area lies opposite to a high point on the obverse design). Pop 59; 50 finer.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,100.

1855 Arrows. PCGS graded MS-64. Bold strike with lovely natural toning on both sides. Arrows were added at the date in 1853-55 to denote a change in the weight standard of America's minor coins (though the Silver Dollar remained at the old standard -- hence, twenty 1855 half dimes weigh less than one 1855 silver dollar).
